First signs of Autumn
Driving to work today, down along the Avon River, I noticed the first real signs of Autumn. After rain yesterday there are now a few leaves on the road, and whilst it is still mid-20s during the day, the evenings are getting chillier.
Tonight, for the first time in a while, we ate our BBQ inside as the nights are drawing in rapidly, and the washing was damp again by the time I got home from work. In addition, for those who may remember my blog post from September 2006, the Godwits have left the city, back on their long flight back to Alaska. So according to the Christchurch City Council summer is officially over.
It all seems strange to me as I have been travelling and have experienced Summer, Winter, Spring, Autumn in the past few weeks. Our trip to the UK & USA in June will add to the confusion as Autumn will be followed by Summer and then straight into Winter when we get back to NZ in mid-July.
Usually Autumn is my least favourite season, with the long winter stretching out in front of you (down in the Southern Hemisphere we do not have Christmas to look forward to as part our winter). This year because we are off travelling and will get (we hope) another dose of summer, I am finding that I am enjoying the changes around the city.
Last Saturday we went to our first Crusaders game of the season, which is part of the tri-national Super 14 competition and Thomas starts his new rugby season with Parklands U7s next week, so it must be heading for winter (although as a Pom I still struggle with Easter in the Autumn!).
Anyway time to get the warmer clothes out and put the boogie boards away for while.
First Leaves
![]()
The first leaves of the Autumn fall
The air stings crisp in morning light
Gold sun and red, beauty for all
The dew clings onto them to stall
But daybreak hits its gloried height
The first leaves of the Autumn fall
Iced wind whips through the bitter hall
Lifts the season’s hopeful first kite
Gold sun and red, beauty for all
Families hug, thankful once and for all
For strewn about the quiet roads tonight
The first leaves of the Autumn fall
But not long till all slows to a crawl
Nature must end its valiant plight
The first leaves of the Autumn fall
Gold sun and red, beauty for all
