Drinkies at Raffles Hotel

For our only time off during our visit to Singapore we took the 10 minute walk from our hotel to the outside bar in the courtyard of Raffles Hotel. We resisted the temptation of their world famous “Singapore Sling” (the price at over $30 helped our resistance!) and settled for a lime and soda!
Raffles Hotel [...]

We ended the day with a trip to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market about 6kms out of town. The market runs on Thursday & Sunday evenings throughout the dry season (April to October), and has been going since 1987 when Darwin locals hit on the idea of bringing a taste of Asia’s night markets to [...]

Wikipedia to colour code text based on reliability

Reading in Wired that there are plans to improve the reliability of information on Wikipedia: To be launched in the (Northern Hemisphere) Autumn, an optional feature called “WikiTrust” will colour code every word of the encyclopedia based on the reliability of its author and the length of time it has persisted on the page.

Not the world’s most intelligent robber then..

Sorry just had to laugh at this one. A robbery suspect has died after spraying his face with paint in a bid to disguise his identity.
24-year-old Thomas James started having difficulty breathing immediately after the raid of a mobile phone shop.
Investigators in South Carolina say the shop’s members of staff had identified James as a [...]

Social media- changing the way we do business

Colleague Greg alerted to this latest video in the same vein as Shifts Happens. I have used Shift Happens with schools and institutions to generate discussions about how the world will look for our children and for the students we are educating. This video looks at the affect of social media on how we do [...]

The consumers win

I was pleased to read that Cadbury has bowed to consumer pressure and agreed to stop using palm oil in its chocolate.
The confectionery giant has received hundreds of letters and emails of complaint after it revealed a new recipe substituted cocoa butter with vegetable fat, including palm oil.
Palm oil has been linked with the clearing [...]

What every women should have

Friend Sonia reminded me of this poem by the wonderful author Maya Angelou
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
enough
money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own,
even if she never wants to or needs to…
A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
something
perfect to wear if the employer,
or date of her dreams
wants to see her [...]

Twitter fights off computer worm

Micro-blogging service Twitter was targeted by a wave of attacks by a computer worm over Easter weekend, a co-founder of the Web messaging company said.
“On a weekend normally reserved for bunnies, a worm took center stage,” Biz Stone said in a post on the official blog of the San Francisco-based startup.
The following advice is supplied [...]

Happy New Year

We celebrated the new year with SingStar at friends Juanita and Philip’s house. We tried Singstar Abba, 80s and Rock Legends, but to no avail we were pretty useless at all of them.. not helped by the fact that the Reddish famaily can all sing! Although I think it would be safe to say that [...]

Kiwi Christmas

After our Swedish Christmas Eve we spent Christmas Day with Howard’s family for a Kiwi Christmas. For the first time forever (no-one can remember the last time) the whole family were together on Christmas Day, Nan & Pop, Howard and his 2 brothers, wives, nephews and nieces. Both Nan & Pop also had a widowed [...]

Swedish Christmas

Our old friends Julie and Lollo, and their children Stefan and Kimmi are over from Sweden for a few weeks, hoping to experience a real Kiwi Christmas; however on Christmas Eve we helped them celebrate a Swedish Christmas. We set up a picnic in Victoria Square in preparation for the Carols by Candlelight service and [...]

The Tuesday morning session was started by a rousing presentation by Ngahihi o te ra Bidois from Rotorua. Given this international conference is being held in New Zealand it was great to have someone who so obviously embraced his NZ and Maori heritage.
Ngahihi o te ra talked of ways to increase your leadership influence  and [...]

Investing for Success: The Creation of Public Value in Tertiary Education

The first keynote speaker at the conference was “Game-keeper turned poacher” Hon Steve Maharey, until recently Minister for Education and about to become Vice-Chancellor of Massey University (where I did my PostGrad study).
Like everything, the tertiary education environment throughout the world is changing and governments are asking to see tangible evidence of a return on [...]

iPod tax could be introduced to fund TV news bulletins

I was interested to read in the Daily Telegraph On-line that the British government  is contemplating the introduction of a new “iPod” tax to help pay for unprofitable programmes on ITV and Channel 4. The levy would be imposed on digital music players, Sky satellite dishes, Freeview boxes and internet subscriptions to [...]
