Second Nature
September 30th, 2004 by gina.revillThis little shop around the corner from my house sells organic produce and is fantastic! I wasn’t convinced about eating organics for lots of reasons, but my flatmate was very keen so we started and I have to say, things do taste better. Especially fruit. It can get expensive though…what’s the solution? Shouldn’t we all be demanding better quality food? Not necessarily merely cheaper?

I think organics are worth it. As you say more money….maybe the same as 1 gallon of petrol a week. Still every doctor I know, and the profession runs in my family, all buy organic food. Do they understand something we miss?

Maybe they’re just richer
Seriously-vegetables have less nutrients now than what they did in the 30s for example, because of the way they are grown and how much longer we keep them before eating-there’s got to be a better way.
But if I was earning a low wage and had 5 children I wonder what I’d say…

Wel I think the concept of a demand-led market is just an illusion maintained by the big supermarket monopolies. What they are actually masking is the fact that under the present system, the motive behind all food production is not healthy consumption, but profitable marketing. As such the organic “brand” which pays a premium, is under strong pressure to increase productivity and cut costs like any other. Brand dilution and conterfeit organics are likely to be rife. The little shop around the corner may just have some good sources of locally produced organics but a lot of it will be bought in from Covent Garden ( The one in Leytonstone, not the tourist trap ) who fly stuff in from all round the world.

Yes I agree with you Andy (I’ll try not to do it again
It’s increasingly harder to buy produce from local growers, though this shop does attempt it as much as possible. I need to source more farmer’s markets etc-actually there’s an amazing delivery service I used for a while called Able and Cole who only use British organic produce at reasonable prices with excellent online service… I must look it up again…

I have to agree with Andy here also. Although I am guilty of not buying just organics, I try and eat healthy. This costs me, one person $100 or more per week. My flat mate can get away on $40 to $50 a week. Our food is very different and by the smell he produces I think I will stick to my healthy eating, even if it does look like vomit. Well one of my tuna/ cottage cheese dishes doesn’t look the best, but is a good source of protein.

Yeah I’ve decided to try to buy local after this discussion and ones I’ve been having with everyone I come in contact with
and there’s no doub that eating healthily is more expensive-ridiculous really…
