e learning

The lovely people from IHSC (Institute of Health and Social Care) from downstairs came to the lab last week for a discussion, arranged by Sarah, about how they could best develop e-learning in their department.

We had a long and informal chat about three things mainly - celebrating what people were already doing online, identifying what some of the barriers were, and strategies to overcome these.
What I found most interesting were the insights people, who had many years experience of traditional face to face lecturing, gave into how e-learning was different. Some ideas we discussed:
e learning is more intensive - not time saving at all, rather the opposite
there are far more meaningful learning relationships - tutor/student and student/student
lack of face to face contact can be hard for some students
Students tend to read more widely
they tend to engage with learning more deeply
people tend to negotiate ideas rather than wait to be told ‘the answer’
is the traditional one hour face to face lecture learning or an introduction to learning?
we can’t expect students to automatically know the difference between traditional university learning and online learning - we need to make the differences explicit

I was fascinated by the stories which the IHSC people could tell each other - as though having some Ultranauts at the meeting helped to pull the communication out. I guess it was a combination of making time to meet and having a slightly different audience.
