Chickens

Melanie and I are looking after the neighbour’s chickens, Penelope and Felicity, for a couple of weeks. There have been fights over who gets to let them out in the morning and who puts them to bed at night. They are gorgeous. We’ve loved their comforting clucking since the day they arrived over a year ago.

They aren’t that smart. Everytime I throw raisins into their cage to lure them into bed, Felicity knows to run through the little door but Penelope finds that one a challenge every time and tries to go through the cage’s side.

Their cage is called ‘Omlet’ and we can attest to its brilliance. We witnessed a fox attack one night. It was noisy and messy and fevered but the fox couldn’t get in.

I had scrambled eggs for breakfast this morning from the eggs I had collected 10 minutes earlier.

If I wasn’t such a transient I’d get some chickens myself.

  1. Are you going to set up a web cam before you go away so you can keep an eye on the chicks?
