Working in a distributed but close team

The team, minus a few travellers, taken from www.ultralab.net

I’ve been working from home all week, as I am much more efficient at marking this way. Over half of our team works remotely anyway, but I haven’t seen my colleagues since before Christmas and that’s an unusually long time for me - I normally go in two or three times per week. I’m looking forward to Monday in the Lab!

The funny thing is I feel as if I’ve been working with them closely anyway despite the geographical distance. Today I had:

  • An online chat with Stephen in the morning but we were twice interrupted by his phone or mine. I did talk to him in the afternoon and it was great to catch up.
  • I’ve called several people to discuss work issues.
  • I’ve had a phone conference.
  • Anthony and I have tried several times to talk on Skype but it never seems to work for us but we managed to talk on the phone later on and I got to think about guinness which I always do when I talk to Anthony.
  • I’ve attended to email business and Richard sent a nice reply to a long email I sent him which didn’t even require a reply and that was nice.
  • I’ve spoken to Claire three times and Maureen once and even Leonie who was manning the phones in the afternoon.
  • I’ve had an online chat with Rex and had a message booting me off First Class twice for back ups!
  • Jonathan was working around the corner today, talking to a local school and we texted and talked a few times, finally about an hour ago as he had to zoom back to Chelmsford so I never go to see him but I feel like I have.
  • I chatted to Sarah briefly.
  • I even spoke to Vix who is not my colleague anymore.

I’m not sure how I managed to get all the marking done :-)
I certainly didn’t feel as if I was working on my own….

    1. I was in Chelmsford this morning, so I had the chance to talk to colleagues face-to-face for a change. It’s a weird world!
