a powerful story

During a visit to Blue Mountain College in Tapanui, I spoke to Shona Bain who was extremely enthused by a recent video conferencing success story. Shona has made the most of her 18 month involvement in the ICT PD cluster schools project, developing expertise in a range of ICTs in a short time. In this podcast she describes those changes, as well as explaining how combining her face to face and video conferencing agriculture classes led to some exciting results.

Hi Jedd
What a great illustration of the power of the tech to motivate and enthuse kids! Isn’t it interesting that it is often boys that really ‘hook into’ the techie side of things.
I know we have found similar things using podcasting with lower ability readers to share their book reviews at our school. They work really hard to craft what they are doing to satisfy their audience. Much more than they would for a written or f2f oral product like “conventional” book reports
Thanks for blogging/podcasting this, and to the teacher for being so willing to share her experiences ….

Shona was very keen to share the video conferencing story as it was so clearly making a difference. We also talked later about how this initial engagement might be sustained and developed over a full term, and how to build on the boys’ interest which has obviously been successfully captured.
